On a remote Plateau, in Central Peru, hundreds of engimatic figures and faces have been found in the living rock. Figures that should not be there at all. Were these figures carved by a lost race? Was there contact between Egypt and Peru in ancient times? Were the more than 200 bizarre images carved by intelligent beings, or created by the whim of nature alone?
Markawasi, located in the central Andes of Peru, is a plateau adorned with enigmatic stone formations. These ancient sculptures, resembling both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, have captured the imagination of explorers and researchers alike
Discovered in 1953 by archaeologist Daniel Ruzo and brought to prominence through his book, Marcahuasi: The Story of a Fantastic Discovery. The site features huge granite rocks with curious shapes, including those resembling human faces, animals, and religious symbols.
The most memorable feature of Marcahuasi is its iconic stone forest. These rock formations bear names like the Monument to Humanity and the Ancient Turtle. Wind erosion over thousands of years shaped these unique natural sculptures, which are believed to be as old as 10,000 years.
Markawasi is shrouded in mystery. According to legend, the ruins harbor at least 22 vortexes of three different types of healing energies. While some believe the rocks were carved intentionally, others argue that simple erosion created these formations. The energy vortices are said to possess healing properties, although specifics remain elusive. There’s even a tale of a paralyzed man who miraculously regained mobility after encountering a mysterious figure at the ruins.
